Background, mission and goals

AGAMA Energy aim to deliver green energy services and projects which satisfy the need for more sustainable social and economic development.

Approach, organisational programmes and activities:

At regional and national level, they engage with policy and, economic debates, regulatory oversight, institutional re-structuring, implementation and utilization regarding the national energy needs and supply options.

At a business (or organisational) level, they increase the overall sustainability and competitive advantage of organisations by reducing the dependence (=risks) on external energy inputs and increasing the proportion of energy inputs which are renewable. At an individual level, they take ownership and responsibility for their energy footprint.

Examples of past successes and experience

Over the past two years AGAMA Energy has:
  1. conceived and facilitated the provision of 845 MWh of Green Power for the World Summit on Sustainable Development - a first in Africa
  2. designed and commissioned the first grid-connected wind energy system in Southern Africa as well as two grid-connected domestic solar PV systems
  3. pioneered the supply and installation of insulated ceilings, energy efficient lighting and solar water heating for existing low-income homes in Khayelitsha as a baseline study for a larger CDM project
  4. co-ordinated and hosted the regional REEEP meeting for Southern Africa

The South African Government has suggested a target for Renewable Energy of 10 000 GWh over ten years corresponding to approximately a 5% increase by 2013 in the proportion of renewable energy in the overall primary energy mix. AGAMA Energy will facilitate the 'market pull' to enable this transformation and provide technical capacity to deliver against this target.
