Background, mission and goals

Description of Organisation

Friends of Conservation (FOC) was launched in 1982, when the Masai Mara and Serengeti regions were loosing wildlife and habitat at a rapid rate. Rampant poaching had decimated black rhino, elephant and buffalo populations to shocking levels. FOC was established to slow and in some cases halt the wildlife and habitat degradation within one of the most bio-diverse and ecological important regions in the world.

Mission Statement

To fully empower local communities with additional skills to manage land, wildlife and natural resources for long-term survival of all concerned.

Approach, organisational programmes and activities:

  1. Training Maasai on how to build and operate fuel-efficient stoves within their 'manyattas.'
  2. Launched research for the usage of cow-dung briquettes.
