Background, mission and goals Description of Organisation This is a Government organisation charged with the responsibility of formulating energy policy.
The government has three departments namely, Geothermal, Electric Power and Renewable Energy. These are involved in the promotion of improved stoves and kilns, biogas, solar, wind, and mini and micro hydro energy technologies. They are also involved in renewable energy mapping and auditing.
These programmes are carried out at their Energy and Agro-forestry centres all over the country.
Objectives To ensure that adequate and sustainable supplies of energy are made available efficiently and at a reasonable cost in line with national development needs.
Approach, organisational programmes and activities The above objective is being achieved through the following strategies: - Promotion of conservation of all forms of energy
- Coal, oil and geothermal exploration
- Fuel substitution/use of alternative energy to broaden energy mix and reduce reliance on imported fuels
- Improve on-and-off farm wood production and increase end-use efficiency
- Ensure an adequate distribution network for all forms of energy
Other activities at the Ministry include: - Developing an inventory of energy technologies
- World Bank study on renewable energy tariffs to be incorporated into the overall energy policy.
