Background, mission and goals

Description of Organisation

Rural Technology Enterprise Ltd (RTE) is an indigenous private company incorporated in Kenya in 1984. In the renewable energy technologies sector, RTE emerged as the market leader in the key areas of product design and development, quality control, installation, training and consultancy within sub-Saharan Africa. RTE has been awarded a Gold Medal for excellence in indigenous innovation in the energy sector by the Government of Kenya.

Approach, organisational programmes and activities

  1. Marketing energy saving stoves, domestic stoves, hot water systems, multi-burner cooking systems as well as baking equipment and accessories
  2. Conducting research and providing consultancy services in energy
  3. Assisting institutions to acquire cook stoves through setting up of easy credit terms

Examples of past successes and experience

RTE has susses successfully implemented the following projects:
  • Design, marketing and commercialisation of the Kenya Ceramic Jiko (KCJ) in Kenya under the Household Energy Progamme (HEP) supported by GTZ
  • Design and installation of improved household stoves for refugees in Bukavu (DRC), and Kakuma (Kenya) supported by UNHCR and GTZ
  • Design, marketing, capacity building and commercialisation of improved household stoves the East and Central African Region including Somalia, Uganda, Ethiopia, Eritrea between 1992 - 2002. Projects supported by IGAD, European Union, & GTZ. Project partners included IUCN and ESD (UK).
  • Design, marketing and installation of improved institutional stoves for over 1000 schools, colleges and hospitals in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania

Overall institutional structure

RTE is a limited private company. The Managing Director is in charge of the day-to-day management and administration of the company and he reports to the Board of Directors. Staff establishment at RTE is as follows: top management (3), technicians and artisans (16), administrative (3), excluding casual workers. Approximate annual turnover Ksh17 million.
